Dominic Rooney

Dominic Rooney

October 12, 2012 - September 3, 2015

  • Hometown: Medicine Hat, Alberta
  • Year of Diagnosis: 2013
  • Diagnosis: Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Dominic Rooney had an amazing spirit, a soul-widening laugh and a thumbs-up for anybody who wanted one.

He also had acute myeloid leukemia, diagnosed at 11 months old in 2013.

Hailing from Medicine Hat, Alta., he was a miracle to his parents, Sean and Trish. He came to love the hallways at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, blowing kisses and making friends despite enduring multiple rounds of chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants and two stays in the ICU. There was always a dance party in his crib; you couldn’t be around him and not be happy.

He said goodbye Sept. 3, 2015 while on his wish trip to Orlando, Florida, crashing the day after he got to Disneyworld.

Dominic, who lived more in his two years than most of us do in a lifetime, is memorialized by the hashtag #Dominicstrong. Cancer took his life, but not his joy.

Our Featured Ambassador

This is Josh Nelson – a childhood cancer survivor. He knows about facing all the challenges of childhood cancer:

“I know first-hand how it feels to be a prisoner in the hospital and endure the surgeries and the endless needles and treatments. I know how it feels to lose my hair, throw up regularly and watch other kids around me earn their wings. I lost a part of my childhood that I will never get back. I know how it feels to look different and to be different. That’s something that I wouldn’t wish for any other kid to go through, and that is why I do what I do.”
