Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve Never Done Spinning Before – what is it?
Spinning is opportunity to set your spirit free from your body whilst twirling in circles at a Grateful Dead Concert. Ok, not quite. Seriously, spinning is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a specially designed stationary bicycle called a spinning bike. The feel of the bike is a lot like a bicycle, except there is no need to balance and watch out for oncoming traffic! Therefore the terrain of the ride is created by the Instructor. Aided by a ‘resistance knob’ that the rider is completely in control of, the intensity of the ride can vary from a wide open roadway (very little resistance) to a very steep hill (high resistance) that may have a rider climb for varied lengths of time. Although you follow the general instructions of the spinning instructor, you are in control when it comes to your pace. You can finish a spin class comfortably, regardless of your fitness level, simply by adjusting your pace or the resistance knob on the bike.
There will be many instructors and resident experts on site to help with any questions and setting up the bike to ensure your safe and comfortable ride. Even if you’ve never been on one of these bikes before, you will be completely taken care of to ensure you can enjoy the positive energy of being involved in this event.
Do I need to train?
No – each bike has an adjustable tension control. This can be an effortless pedal, or, you can challenge yourself to create a challenging workout. It’s up to you!
Will There be Snacks or Beverages Provided Onsite?
There will be plenty of water provided to the participants to keep them hydrated during this event. We will also provide fruit for quick energy!
How much time do I need to commit on the day of the event?
The event is 4 hours long and many team members stay for the entire time to cheer on their team. However, each participant only needs to be present when he/she rides. Depending on the number of team members, the time commitment for each participant will range between 30 minutes to 1 hour. For example, in a team of four people, each person would ride for one hour. In a team of eight people, each person would ride for 30 minutes.
What is the Minimum Donation Required to Participate in this Event?
Bike for Tykes is one of the largest fundraisers of the year in support of the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation. This year our goal is to raise $225,000!
In 2011 many teams raised over $2000!!
This year, teams of 4 must raise over $800, and the minimum expectation for larger teams of 6-8 is to raise over $1000 and $1200 respectively. However, we encourage you to raise as much as possible for the children living with and beyond cancer.
Teams will select from a list of fundraising targets that outline specific costs associated with the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation - its a great way to see how their contributions can make a BIG difference in the life of a child.
